既に3年も経ちました
僕が札幌で生活を始めて、12月28日でちょうど3年になりました。
時間が経つのはアッという間ですね。
僕が気に入っていることの一つですが、札幌とその周辺の地方には、たくさん良い温泉があります。残念ながら、この3年間はず～っと温泉めぐりで、のんびりするという訳にはいきませんでした。
行きたいのは山々なのですが、貧乏暇なしで、なかなか時間がとれなくなってきました。
とにかく、最初の一年で本が書けるほど温泉を巡りました。
そんな日々は遠い思い出のようです。
今では仕事がとても忙しくなり、温泉に行く時間を作るのが難しくなりました。
もし皆さんが札幌に来られるようなことがありましたら、是非試していただきたいのは、塩サウナ、茶色の湯の温泉と雪に囲まれた露天風呂です。
温泉で体を温めさえすれば、雪の降る中でも、裸で外にいても大丈夫なんですよ。
僕も1時間でもいいから温泉に入りたいものです。
As of the 28th of December I have been in Sapporo for exactly 3 years. The time has gone very fast. Sapporo and the surrounding area is famous for its hot springs, one of the things that endears me to the area. If I look back at the 3 years it is not as thought I have been spending all my time soaking in one of the many hot springs in and around Sapporo. As much as I would like to have been doing this, the opportunities have been getting fewer and fewer. I could have written a book about the many hot springs in and around Sapporo after my first year. Those days are now distant memories. A family to feed is more important than a life in and out of hot springs. If you come to Sapporo, try and get to a salt sauna or one of the hot springs which have deep brown / black water or even an outdoor bath which is encircled by snow. If you warm your body in the hot spring first, you can stand naked outside in the falling snow. I long for an hour in a hot spring.

ボクシング・ディー(K1とは違うよ)
ボクシング・ディーとはクリスマスの3連日のうちの1日のことを言います。
1日目はクリスマス・イヴ、2日目はクリスマス・ディー、そして最終日はボクシング・ディーです。
ここで、問題です。
「ボクシング・ディーとは、何でしょうか??」
オーストラリアでは25・26日が祭日で、ボクシング・ディーは26日です。
宗教的な日ではありませんが、イギリスの教会に関係があると言われています。
その昔、教会はクリスマス・ディーの翌日に、教会のたくさんの貯金箱（ボックス）から貧しい人々に、金銭をあげていました。ボクシング・ディーは、イギリスのその風習からきているようです。
ところで、現在、この日はオーストラリアでは、どんな日になっているのでしょうか？
答えは、スポーツ、スポーツそしてスポーツです!!
1) メルボルンで行われる‘ボクシング・ディー・テストマッチ’の初日です。
５日間にわたって、オーストラリア 対 招待国のクリケットの大きな試合が行われます。２００４年の招待国はパキスタンでした。このクリケットの試合は、８万人の観客を収容できる大きなスタジアムで行われます。
2) シドニーとホーバート間では、恒例ヨット・レースがスタートする日です。
このレースは、シドニーを出発した後、タスマニアの州都ホーバートを目指します。そして、レースに参加した殆どのヨットは、元旦に到着します。
スポーツとは別に、ボクシング・ディーはクリスマス翌日ということで、「回復の日」とされています。
つまり、パーティーで食べ過ぎたり、飲み過ぎた人達が、リラックスする日でもあり、パーティーの片付けをする日でもあります。
僕も、今、ボクシング・ディーが欲しいです。
Boxing Day is one of the 3 great days of Christmas. The first being Christmas Eve, the second being Christmas Day and finally, Boxing Day. Boxing Day, what is Boxing Day?? Well, it is the 26th of December and it is a public holiday in Australia. The second day of the 2 day Christmas holiday period. It is not a religious day, but it does have some link to the Church in England from where it originates. In medieval times, the church used to break open collection boxes and give the contents to the poor. The opening of boxes is the link with the name Boxing Day. Why is this day a great day in Australia? Sport, sport and more sport. 1) The first day of the Boxing Day test match in Melbourne. A 5 day cricket game is played between Australia and a visiting side. This year it is Pakistan. The capacity of the ground is about 80,000 people. A great spectacle. 2) The start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. A race from Sydney to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. Most boats arrive around New Years day.Apart from sport, Boxing Day is usually a recovery day after Christmas. People who eat too much, drink too much relax on this day. A day where people clean up after the big day, Christmas Day. Give me a Boxing Day any day.

もうひとつのホワイト・クリスマス
札幌に住んで3年、やっとホワイトクリスマスに慣れました。
日本ではクリスマスが、祝日でないことや24日のクリスマスイブの方が大事なこと、気温が氷点下になることにもです。
私の出身地オーストラリアではクリスマスの日は祝日（実は25日と26日の2連休）で、家族が集まって時間を過ごします。
また、温かい食事ではなくハムやサラダなどの食事が主流で、ケーキはスポンジケーキやデコレーションケーキではありません。
この日にビーチで泳ぐのも習慣的なイベントです。真冬のクリスマスの札幌で、この時期に寝ぼけてTシャツ、短パンで出かけないように気をつけます。
もし、そんな姿の僕を見たらシドニー行きの一番早い飛行機に乗せて下さい。
暑い真夏のクリスマスというのが、私にとっては本当のクリスマスなのです。
とにかく、どんなクリスマスにせよ、この一年を振り返り、あなたの周りの大切な人達のことを思ってください。

After 3 years in Sapporo I think I have become used to a white Christmas. What have I become used to? A Christmas day which is not a public holiday, a day where Christmas Eve is more important than Christmas day and a day where the temperature doesn’t go much over freezing point. However, where I am from, a Christmas day is one where there is a public holiday (actually 2 days), where families spend time together, a day where a cold meal is preferred to a hot one, a Christmas cake is not a sponge cake and one where a visit to the beach with a swim is considered customary. I hope I don’t wake forgetting where I am, put on a pair of shorts and a T shirt and want to go for my customary swim at the beach. If you see someone fitting this description in the snow fields please put him on the earliest flight for Sydney. A hot Christmas is a real Christmas for me.

西遊記
僕が始めて日本を意識したのは約20年前のことで、それは自宅の居間でした。
当時、平日の18時半から30分間放送されたオーストラリア放送局（ABC)の「西遊記」という日本の番組をテレビでみたことです。
僕と弟は数年にわたり、このサルとブタと河童と坊さんのアドベンチャーにくぎずけでした。
今考えると、この子供番組の舞台は中国からインドへの巡礼で日本には関係なく、作成されたのが日本だっただけなのに、これをきっかけに僕が日本に興味を持ったというのも不思議な話です。
やがて「西遊記」を卒業した僕と弟は忍者に興味を持ち始めました。
誰にも教えられずに僕と弟は手作りの忍者グッズを上手に使いこなすようになりました。
そして数年後、僕の初来日が現実したのです。
日本滞在中は常にサルとブタと河童と坊さんが頭のすみにありましたが、その姿を見ることはありませんでした。
しかし、ある日ブタの顔を発見したのです。
彼は「釣りバカ日読」という映画の中で、ハマちゃんとして主人公を演じていましたが、ブタのおもかげはばっちり残っていました。
この「西遊記」から始まった日本来日への道は本当の話です。
My first contact with Japan was made in my living room about 20 years ago. Weekday nights from 18:30 for half an hour “Monkey Magic” was shown on the ABC. The adventures of the Pig, the monkey, the river monster and the monk kept my brother and me entertainer for ages. It is strange that a children’s program about a pilgrimage from China to India made in Japan by this strange group could invoke such an interest in Japan for me. My brother and I graduated from “Monkey Magic”. We then turned our attention to making ninja tools. With no official training we became quiet proficient in the use of these tools. For a teenager, a good wholesome initiation to Japan. My first visit to Japan came a number of years later. The pig, monkey, river monster and monk were always in the back of my mind but never seen. Until one day, the face of the pig appeared in a drama about a fishing crazy salary man. Hama chan, the name of the character in this fishing drama, “Tsuri no baka”, still has all the charm and charisma that I liked about the pig. This is the truth I can not hide.

自己紹介
最初に、僕の自己紹介をさせて頂きます。
30数年前、オーストラリアのナウラという小さな町で生まれました。
ナウラという町はシドニーから南に約200kmに位置します。
僕がシドニーで日本語の勉強を始めたのは今から12年前のことです。
オーストラリアだけではなく、日本でも日本語を勉強したことがあります。
それは8年前鹿児島大学で1年間勉強しました。とても貴重な時間でした。
その後オーストラリアに戻り、近畿日本ツーリストシドニー支店に就職しました。
そこで4年間半日本からの特別なツアーの現地手配を担当しました。
2001年12月、僕と妻は眩しいビーチの常夏のシドニーをたち真っ白な雪景色の札幌に来ました。
それからあっという間に3年が経ってしまいました。
これまで日本の上と下、札幌と鹿児島での生活を経験しましたが、まだ、住んだことがない本州についても是非覗いてみたいと思います。
I have given you my name, but who is behind the name. I would like to give you a brief introduction at this early stage. Well, I was born in a small town called Nowra over 30 years ago. Nowra is located about 200 kilometers south of Sydney. I started studying Japanese about 12 years ago in Sydney. I studied at both universities in Australia and in Japan. I spend 1 year studying at Kagoshima University about 8 years ago. A very valuable experience. I returned to Australia and found work at Kintetsu International Express. I spent 4 and a half years arranging specialized tours for Japanese groups.In December 2001 my wife and I left the sunny shores of Sydney for the white snow fields of Sapporo.
3 years have passed by very quickly. I have spent time on the extremities of Japan, Kagoshima and Sapporo but yet to discover the hidden treasures of the main land.

「いらっしゃいませ!」
僕が日本に来て最初に覚えた言葉の一つが「いらっしゃいませ」でした。
どこへ行っても、買い物に行っても、食事に行っても、飲みに行っても、お客様と接する店員さんは皆必ずこの言葉を使っていました。
そして、今この言葉を僕が使うことになりました。
「いらっしゃいませ!」
そしてWelcome!
僕がKurruttiのマネージャーのクレイグです。
私達は、1月の後半に正式にこのお店をオープンする予定で最後の準備をしています。
本日は本当にご来店ありがとうございます。
次回、僕個人の紹介、Kuruttiの紹介と私達の活動内容について説明したいと思います。
The word 「irrashaiamase」 was one of the first words I learnt after arriving in Japan. Where ever I went, whether that be shopping, eating or even drinking, this word was said with great enthusiasm by all staff who had contact with customers.It is now my turn to use this word. 「Irasshaiamase」 and welcome.
You have entered Kurrutti and I am the store manager, Craig.
We are currently putting the finishing touches to our store which we plan to open in late January.
Today I would like to welcome you. From tomorrow I will give you a little self introduction, an introduction about to Kurutti and what we do.
