第2回札幌国際交流会
先週の木曜日、ゲストとして第2回札幌国際交流会に出席しました。ネットワークするたけではなく、地元札幌の企業さんとビジネスに関わっている外国人との交流の機会でした。HIBA（北海度国際ビジネス協会）の会長フレッドはゲストとして講演を行いました。彼は25年間北海道に在住した経験を活かし、非常に面白いスピーチをしました。その内容は、彼自身のバックグラウンド、チャリティーの活動、そしてビールに関しての楽しい話でした。彼は300種類以上のビールを輸入している会社の社長で、「ビール博士」とも呼ばれています。彼のホームページをご覧ください。
The 2nd Sapporo international business exchange meeting Last Thursday I attended the ‘2nd Sapporo international business exchange’ meeting as a guest. It is not just a networking opportunity for attendees but also a meeting in which local businesses are trying to connect to the international community. The chairman of HIBA, Phred, was the guest speaker. He has lived in Hokkaido for 25 years and gave a very entertaining presentation. We learnt about where he is from, his charity work and beer. Tokyu Dept’s Organic Festa. Here we come. The organic festival in Sapporo will be held at the Tokyu Dept. store (Sapporo City, Chuo ku, North 4 West 2) from the 31st of March to the 6th of April. I will be there with my Lemon Myrtle products. I plan to take the following. 1) Lemon Myrtle Tea 2) Essential oil 3) Bath salts 4) Massage oil 5) Lip cream 6) Gift boxIf you have time come down and say hello. While you are there I will pour you a drink of Lemon Myrtle tea and if you come early you can try the cake of the day.

私達の植林計画がスタート!!
Kurrutti植林計画の開始をご報告できることを嬉しく思います。ワイルドライフ ランド基金の友人は私達のためにレモンマートルの木を植えてくれています。今日はKurruttiケアのスタートの日です。皆さんのご協力で、年に数回、植林が出来れば、とても嬉しく思います。

Our tree planting program has started I am very happy to advise that the Kurrutti Tree planting program has commenced. Our friends at the Wildlife Land Fund have planted the first of our lemon Myrtle trees. Today is the start of Kurrutti care. With your support we hope to be able to do a number of plantings a year.Below is a photo of one of the volunteers who was involved in the tree planting program.

オーストラリア・インポート・アワード授賞記念レセプション
3月11日（金）の夜、札幌で開かれた第1回目オーストラリア・インポート・アワード2005年に出席しました。
札幌のオーストラリア領事館の主催で、約100社の企業が参加しました。
東京の在日オーストラリア大使も出席していました。
オーストラリア領事館は、オーストラリア製品やサービスの輸入に対する企業の努力に感謝するとともに、特に先進的に尽かしている5つの企業を表彰しました。
R.M.ウイリアムズ社、北海道コカコーラボトリング株式会社、株式会社第一飼料、株式会社ペットランド、北日本農水産販売株式会社の5つです。
オーストラリア料理が出されました。
ミートパイ、マンゴー、ラム肉料理などなど。
多くのオーストラリア人と一流にオージーフードを楽しみとてもなつかしい感じがしました。
その夜は、とても素敵な時間を過ごし、またオーストラリアに関係するビジネスに興味がある人達とも出会うことが出来ました。
The Ist Australia Import Awards On the night of the 11th of March I attended the 1st Australia import awards. The event was arranged by the Australian consulate Sapporo and representatives from about 100 companies attended. The Australian Ambassador to Japan who is based in Tokyo also attended. The Consulate used this event to thank companies that are importing Australian products and services into Hokkaido. 5 companies were presented with awards in appreciation of their outstanding efforts. They were R.M Williams, Hokkaido Coca Cola, Dai ichi Shiryo, Pet Land and Hokkaido Agriculture and Marine Products. Australian food was also served. There were meat pies, mangoes, lamb and many other mouth watering dishes. I felt like I was back in Australia as I was mixing with many Australians and eating some typical Auzzie food. Having the chance to mix with others that have a business interest in Australia made for a very interesting night.

フィッシュ虎かキラーホエールか？
私は日本語を勉強し始めて随分たちますが、新しいことを知るときはとてもワクワクします。
ある日、シャチについてのテレビ番組を見ていたときに、「シャチは漢字でどう書くの？」と妻に聞きました。
「漢字は無いわ。シャチはカタカナでしか書かないよ」との答えでした。
数日後、他の人と話しているときにも、シャチが話題になり、その人にもシャチの漢字を聞いてみましたが、答えは「無い」でした。
私は納得がいかず、近くにあった辞書で「シャチ」を探してみました。
驚いたことに、シャチという漢字があり、しかもとても面白い字が使われていました。
英語に直訳すると「魚の虎」。「鯱」という漢字です
虎はジャングルの王で、シャチは海の王です。
言語や民族が違っても、多くの共通点があるものです。
Fish tiger or killer whale?? I have been studying Japanese for a long time and learning new things is still such a thrill. I was watching a program about Killer Whales the other day and asked my wife 'Is there Chinese characters (Kanji, as it is known in Japanese) for the word Killer Whale'? 'NO' she said. 'It's only written in Katakana. I was speaking to someone else a few days later and the topic of Killer Whales came up again. 'Is there Kanji for Killer Whale'? I asked this person. 'NO' was the reply. I wasn't satisfied. I reached for the closest dictionary and looked up 'Killer Whale' in the dictionary. To my surprise there was Kanji, more interesting was the Kanji that was used. A direct translation in english being, Fish Tiger. The Tiger is the king of the jungle and the killer whale is the king of the ocean. Languages and different races of people do have a lot in common.

手助け
昨日、私は友達との待ち合わせで、18時50分頃すすきの駅にいました。
とても混んでいました。
その人ごみの中、なかなか前に進めないでいる視覚に障害を持つ若い男性がいました。
私は彼のところへ行って大丈夫か声を掛けました。
彼は気弱な声で「ロビンソンに行きたいのですが」と言うのです。
ロビンソンはすすきの駅に隣接した大きなデパートで、入り口は20メートルぐらいしか離れていません。
でも、彼にとっては2マイルもあるように感じたのかもしれません。
私は、彼が行きたいところまで連れて行ってあげました。
ほんの数分の出来事でしたが、彼が目的の場所へ行くことを手助けし、人として思いやることができました。
「人にする良い行い悪い行いは必ず自分に返ってくる」ということわざがあります。
私は、いつもこうありたいと思います。
A helping hand. Yesterday I was at Suskino station at about 18:50 waiting for some friends. It was very crowded. A visually impaired young man was trying to get through the crowd without a lot of luck. I went up to him and asked him if he was O.K. A timid voice said 'I want to go to Robinson'. Robinson is a big department store located next to Suskino station. The entrance was only about 20 metres away but must have felt like 2 miles for this man. I escorted him to where he wanted to go to. It only took a few minutes, made be feel human again and helped this man get to his destination.Sayings do have meaning. 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto
you'. I'd give a helping hand anyday.

ニセコ オーストラリアの一番新しい州
非公式ではあるけど、オーストラリアの８番目の州が誕生しました。
場所は南半球ではなく、北半球にあります。
札幌から約２時間半のところ。
そう、北海道のニセコはオーストラリアの一番新しい州だと宣言します！
2004年から2005年にかけてのスキーシーズンに、約60,000人のスキーヤーがオーストラリアからここにやって来ました。
ニセコは世界でも有数のパウダースノーが楽しめる場所です。
オーストラリアとはほとんど時差がなく（オーストラリアの出発地によっては1～2時間の時差はありますが）、オーストラリア航空が冬季間、札幌－ケアンズ間の直行便を週２便就航しています。
多くの地元の人たちは、オージー達を歓迎しています。
私の故郷の町の人口は、前回見たときは、65,000人でした。
想像できますか？
私の故郷Nowraの全人口が冬季間にニセコに来ているなんて！
本当にスゴイことでしょ？
もし、ニセコに来ることになったら、私へのベジマイトを忘れずに持ってきてくださいね。
Niseko, the newest Australian state. The 8th unofficial state of Australia has just been born. It is not in the southern hemisphere, rather the northern hemisphere. Yes, Niseko, in Hokkaido, 2 and a half hours from Sapporo, has been declared the newest Australian state. About 60,000 visitors (skiers) from Australia visited this area in the 2004/2005 ski season. Niseko has some of the best powder snow in the world. Has no time difference all but 1 or 2 hours depending on where you are departing from, and has 2 direct flights operated by Australian Airlines from Cairns to Sapporo during winter. There are many locals here that are keen to welcome the Auzzies. The last time I looked, the population of my hometown was only 65,000 people. Could you imagine it? The whole population of Nowra visiting Niseko over winter? A pretty awesome thought?If you decide to come over make sure you bring some vegemite for me.
